      FOREWORD

The blowgun is still much in use at present by tropical jungle tribes but has long been forgotten as a weapon. It is a weak weapon but it offers something unique and different from other weapons that are used for hunting and for sport shooting.

Mr. Amante P. Mariñas Sr. recognized and studied the sports aspect of the blowgun and wrote the historical book Pananandata Guide to Sport Blowguns that was published in 1999 by United Cutlery Corp. In June 2001, in recognition of his work, I asked Mr. Mariñas to become the Co-Chairman of the International Sport Blowgun Association (ISBA) that I founded in October 1992. It was an honor for me when he accepted. The name ISBA had been changed in 2004 to International Fukiyado Association (IFA).

Mr. Mariñas and I have been promoting blowgun shooting as a sport. It is a sport that can be participated in by seniors, women, and the handicapped where they can become as good as stronger and healthier individuals. While the shooting of the blowgun may seem effortless, it still requires not only power, but also intelligence, total focus, and good technique.

If you have tried shooting the blowgun then you have experienced how absorbing and satisfying it is and how it can lead to hours of fun. I hope that you would experience the health effect of the sport and would introduce the sport to your friends. Shooting the blowgun is an enjoyable and a beneficial activity to engage in.

Mr. Mariñas, a chemical engineer, has applied his science background to do an in-depth study of the shooting of the blowgun. He has practiced blow gunning for many years. It is amazing that he has shot the blowgun more than 700,000 times to gather the information he needed to find the answers to questions he had asked himself.

This work will lead you to a better understanding of the blowgun and will teach you the uniqueness of and the fine techniques needed to attain a high level of skill in the sport. This must be the textbook of blowgun for beginners and should be read by all blowgun shooters.

      PREFACE

Our house was surrounded by trees, mostly fruit-bearing, such as mango, guava, atis, guyabano, kamatsile, saresa, balubad and bignay. They would shed their leaves once a year at which time my mother would use the walis na tingting.

To the left of my house were two kapok trees. To the right of my house, reachable from our open porch is achiote. A few feet away from the achiote are banana plants. To the back of the house was our bamboo grove.

Thus, I had all that was needed to make a blowgun—bamboo
