Если верить Плутарху (Pyrrh. 16; Tit. 5), когда эпирский царь Пирр впервые увидел устройство лагеря и боевые порядки римлян, то воскликнул с удивлением: «Порядок в войсках у этих варваров совсем не варварский!» По словам Полибия (XVIII. 28. 2), как некогда лакедемоняне превзошли в военном деле всех азиатов и эллинов, так римляне оказались в этом отношении выше всех народов (ср.
