DRIVING | LA CONDUITE
France has an excellent motorway system, but be aware that many of the “autoroutes” are toll-paying. Where possible, avoid motorway travel on “Black Saturdays” (“samedis noirs”) – these are periods of dense road traffic that occur at the beginning of French holiday times.

YOU SHOULD KNOW...
Speed limits on French roads go by kmph, not mph. In dry weather, the limits are 50 kmph (31 mph) in built-up areas; 80 kmph (49 mph) on two-lane highways; 110 kmph (68 mph) on dual carriageways; and 130 kmph (80 mph) on motorways. In wet weather, the limit is reduced by 20 kmph on motorways, and by 10 kmph on any other roads.
