People of one type become increasingly alike
When the participants in the panel interviews for their type take their seats, you see diversity: men and women, older and younger people, and differences in terms of lifestyle, religion, origin, profession, and clothing. Then the interview starts and the participants tell their stories. In a fascinating way, this kind of panel interview shows how people with the same type have had similar experiences, list comparable examples, and share the same anecdotes. They have developed the same types of strengths and encounter the same problems in life and in their relationships. The people often recognize a great deal in the other participants. It can be a true revelation: “I’m not the only person to whom this happens constantly.” Often, the participants in the panel give each other support and advice and have the desire to talk to each other afterward. In a wonderful way, the audience also increasingly understands how much the participants in the panel resemble each other in certain respects. This becomes ever more visible as soon as you learn to look past the external differences.
Learn from panel interviews
What is so instructive about a panel interview? Let’s start with the participants. The panel interview invites people to observe themselves and report about their observations. This often spontaneously leads to self-reflection. As a panel member, you’re encouraged to think about yourself. It’s often a pleasant, accessible, safe, inspiring, and even playful method to learn, practice, and structurally apply skills such as self-observation and reflection. Participating in a panel is often an instructive experience for that person. It deepens self-awareness because you’re asked to tell others how things work for you. In the attempt to share their experience in a way that others can understand, people learn by listening to themselves. In the end, the participants in the panel also learn from each other, maybe because a member has discovered their own blind spot that the other participants haven’t noticed yet.
The audience of a panel interview learns a great deal about the psychology of people with a certain Enneagram type. People often have assumptions about what is happening inside someone else's mind. In difficult situations, people are often surprised or annoyed or feel powerless and ask themselves what might drive another person. A panel interview might present an Enneagram type that doesn’t relate to you at all. When these people talk about what happens inside them, you get a chance to hear, directly from them, what motivates them deep inside — no hypotheses, no assumptions, and no theories about how they are, other than their own, authentic statements about how they experience their own truth and their own day-to-day lives and how they perceive the world.
Panel interviews arouse empathy
Simply by watching a panel interview, you create a greater understanding of the fact that people are different, and you help explain how they set themselves apart from others. Misunderstandings and communication problems, and the conflicts that arise from them, also become recognizable and visible. People with different Enneagram types generally can’t understand each other well. After a panel interview, I’m often approached by people who suddenly recognize their father, sister, partner, or colleague in the type that was interviewed in the panel. They’re delighted when they develop a slightly better understanding of what is happening in the other person and what is motivating them. They get the chance to hear something that reveals the hidden nature of someone they know, and it's coming from someone who isn’t close to them, but rather who greatly resembles the relevant person.
NINE PERSPECTIVES OF REALITY
The world looks different to each of the nine Enneagram types. Remember that people differ from each other, and keep their differences in mind. Innumerable problems between people can be attributed to their inability to recognize the prism through which the other person views the world. Everyone has their own reality and is convinced that their prism is the only one that reveals the truth. This prevents people from recognizing another person’s reality, and then they can’t accept that reality. Realizing that your view of the world shows only one-ninth of reality can help you maintain an open-minded position and bring everyone the tolerance they need in order to be interested in another person’s ideas. The panel interviews represent a podium on which the nine perspectives of reality equally find their place.
