Cover: An attractive combination of sporty impressions and decent muscle in base small-block form, Ford’s first Mach 1 Mustang became a real jet-setter in 1969 when fitted with the optional 428 Cobra Jet big-block. (Photo Courtesy Tom Shaw)
Frontispiece:
A blacked-out hood with tie-down pins was standard up front for the 1969 Mach 1 unless a customer opted to delete the latter items. Included with the Ram-Air 428 CJ, Ford’s familiar Shaker hood scoop also could be installed atop both available 351 small-blocks (2- or 4-barrel), as well as the optional 390-cube big-block.
Title Page:
Dearborn’s new-for-1969 SportsRoof body, with its low lines, ducktailed deck lid, and non-functional rear-quarter air intakes, excited horse lovers enough on its own. Additional standard Mach 1 exterior upgrades (tape stripes, dual racing mirrors, competition-style gas cap, and chromed styled-steel wheels) enhanced the attraction sky high.
Contents Page:
Mach 1 customers in 1969 could chose between 16 regular-production paint choices. Or they could special order any one of about 250 Ford fleet colors, as demonstrated by this radioactively yellow example. Meadowlark Yellow, 1969’s officially listed W-code Mach 1 finish, paled noticeably in comparison. (David Newhardt photo, Courtesy Mecum Auctions)
